According to Jon Poston's book, ""The Buildings of Charleston"", this three story structure was built by William Vanderhorst for his son James around 1770. Hutty's work largely represents Charleston's Renaissance of the 1920's and 30's. Handsome formal rooms on the first level are complimented by a modern kitchen addition with views of the separate but equally charming carriage house that was once Hutty's studio. The kitchen den overlooks a private courtyard outside the studio. The second level is complete with a master bedroom and bath to the rear of the main house. A bright and spacious library overlooks 18th Century Tradd Street. There is a half bath in the hall. The third level offers two spacious bedrooms, one with a full bath en suit, the other full bath is conveniently in the hall. The entry to the rear carriage house is off the private courtyard. Upon entering, you immediately step back in time. The exposed brick walls and floors create a feeling from another era in Charleston. ""Batten Board"" walls, a huge ""north light"" window enhance the ""artist"" studio look. There is a full bath and kitchen, along with a lofted bedroom in this very charming structure. Notes: Both main house and carriage house roofs were replaced recently (1997/1998 tile and slate). The 48 Tradd address is still a separate tax map number, now the beautiful garden and ample parking. Historic Charleston Foundation easement is in place only to conserve the lot at 48. No easement exists on the main house and carriage house structures. The main house currently has 3 bedrooms and three and a half baths, 2950 sqft. The carriage house has one bedroom and one and a half bath, 1365 sqft.
